List THREE new things you learned after watching the movie.
List THREE things that the movie helped you to understand better.
List THREE things you are still confused about OR THREE questions you still have about Luther and the Protestant Reformation.
What do you think the Catholic Church will do in response to the Reformation?
Things that I learned after watching the movie:
ReplyDelete1.When Luther went into hiding there were people who continued on his ideas
2.The Some of the followers of Luther were so enthusiastic that they were corrupt and did not properly support Luther's ideas.
3.The Roman Empire would be split apart with the New Testament being translated and printed in German.
Things that the movie helped me understand better.
1.The apparel that they wore was very strange.
2.I now somewhat have a better understanding of their system of church/government.
3.The princes and the pope had power back then.
Things that I am still confused about.
1.How many copies of the new German translated bible did Luther produce?
2.How long after the printing of the German bible till the fall of that system?
3.why did the old guy not accept the rose as a present?
one thing i learned was that even though Luther would not take back his 95 thesis he did believe that he had been harsh on some of them. Another thing that i learned was that a great deal of people shared the same views as Luther, so many that in fact thaey continued to support him while he was in seclusion. i also learned that the father cared for Luther so much that he did the only thing he could to help when he disowned luther he was trying to save his life
ReplyDeletethe movie helped me better understand the relationship between Luther and the prince. although he wants to help Luther he is also looking out for his best intrest, if more people question the church they loose power and he gains it. another thing that the movie helped me understand is how big the rivalry between the church and the kings for power was. the king goes to the extreams of kidnaping Luther just so the church cant do it first. the last thing the movie helped me understand was how much Luther believed in his cause. in the end when he is asked if he knows what it means by him having translated the bible in German and the affects that it could possibly have he says yes and accepts it, even after what he has seen happen because of his prvious actions
one of the things that i am still confused about is why Luther and the church couldnt come up with some sort of compromise instead of letting peoples actions sprial out of control. the second thing im confused on is why was Luther allowed to come back out of seclusion? because the risks for him still seemed the same (for me). the third thing that i dont understand is why Luther's supporters got so violent. They said they were continueing what Luther started but he never gave them any reason to think he would use violence so why did they?
After watching the movie, I learned and built upon the material I already knew. One example is learning about Luther and his ideas about how Christianity was being corrupt. Also I learned about how the social structure was set up in his time period. Lastly I learned about the measures people will go to in order to get religious freedom. I am still confused about some of the legal issues, like why he had to be tried in "Germany". Also I don't understand why the emperor didn't try to work out a deal with Luther that would benefit his power gain. And one more thing I was unsure about is what ended up happening? I think that it will lead to a new and reformed catholic church, they will be forced to change their ways.
ReplyDeleteThree things that I learned through the movie was that the ability for priests to marry started with Luther, much of the Holy Roman Empire was called "Germany", and that Luther was critical of some of his accusations. The movie helped me understand the followers of Luther better, the princes and Emperor relationship and how Luther came to realize his opposition to the church. Three questions I have are: What happened to the guy who took Luther’s actions too far (the other professor)?, When Luther was "under cover" why didn’t he deny that he was Luther?, Who were the people up on the hill in the last scene?.
ReplyDeleteI think that the Catholic Church will have reformations of its own. If people are switching faiths because they don’t like how the Catholics are running things the church will reform to make their faith more appealing. I also think they will tell people bad things about other faiths in order to keep followers.
Three things I learned after the movie was how connected the pope and emporer were, that Luther got married even though he was a priest, and how violent the reformation really was. The movie helped me understand how the political system worked,(with the pope, emporer, and the princes and they were all connected) how corupted the catholic church was, and how indulgences worked. Before I didn't really understand the process of obtaining one, but the movie clearly illustrated the process. Three things I'm still confused about are how the church got as corupted as it was, why the people didn't see how wrong it was before Luther, and who the woman he married was.
ReplyDeleteIn response to the reformation, I think the catholic church will try and gain more followers by making themselves seem better, and try to draw attention to the faults of the protestants. They will continue to sell indulgences, but try to make it seem like you're not just buying your way into heaven.
I learned that even though Germany wasn't a country it was part of the Roman Empire, Luther wasn't just a priest he was also a proffesor, and that when Luther was excommunicated by the church he was protected by his prince. The movie helped me understand that the roles of religious and political leaders were similar, that the revolt of Luther's followers became violent, and how indulgences and relecs of the church worked. I think the church will have it's own reformation although maybe not as extreme I think they will get rid of some of the corruption of things like indulgences and relics and just try to better themselves because they have more competition to gain follwers with
ReplyDeleteThree things I learned from the movie was how many followers Luther actually had, the Roman Empire would be separated if the Testament was printed out in German and how strongly Luther believed in his accusations. The movie helped me better understand how corrupt the church the actually was by giving out indulgences to uneducated people that didn't know any better. It also helped me understand how the church was run. Lastly, it helped me understand why Luther decided to make the 95 Theses. I am still confused about is why did the people let the church get so corrupted, how long was Luther in Seclusion and why was Luther able to come out of seclusion with no harm. I think the Catholic Church will try to gain back its followers by making Luther look like the bad guy.
ReplyDelete3 new things I learned after watching the movie:
ReplyDelete1. Luther believed that catholic priests can marry
2. The prince of Germany supported Luther so that he could obtain more power
3. Catholics from all over the holy Roman Empire would travel to this monumental set of holy stairs and pay money to pray their way to the top of it to ensure their passage to heaven and secure their Christiandom.
3 things that the movie helped you to understand better:
1. What the diet of worms actually was.
2. Why the king supported Luther and not the church, even though they were teamed up.
3. The Role of the Emperor as a supporter of the Church as opposed to his uncle, the Prince, who supported Luther.
3 confused/questions:
Near when Luther had appeared before the Diet of Worms, it showed the classroom he once taught in with a lecture going on in it, and afterwards, a group of men left it quarreling about Luther’s teachings. What was the significance of this ?
Why is the Diet of Worms called a diet ?
All the priests that denied the Emperor’s will-why and how were they familiar with Luther’s teachings, and why weren’t they opposed to them since that may benefit them more personally ?
Why did the Holy Roman Empire have both an Emperor and a Prince ?
In response to the reformation, I think the church and politics will be separate, bringing the Holy Roman Empire to a close and now the church will change the title of offerings and indulgences so that people will think it’s something different and buy it. Also, the church will form branchings of Luther's ideas and masses will continually be taught in native conventional languages.
1. After watching Luther and our class discussions, I learned that Luther was the first to introduce the idea of priests being married. I also learned about how Germany was not a country at the time and instead was the Holy Roman Empire and that as such there were also royalties that were not the emperor, like the Prince. The princes and royalties who were not the prince also opposed the church and followed Martin Luther so that they could gain power in the power struggle, which I had never known before.
ReplyDelete2. The movie helped me to understand more about the kind of greed and sin that surrounded the church of that time and how corrupt and unchristian they were. It also helped me to understand more about the kind of people that lead revolutions and reformation movements. For instance, the way that someone will choose to lead the people in a peaceful manner using words and standing tall and proud without relent against the opposition, and then the people become violent after their leader is gone. This was true of Martin Luther, and of Martin Luther King Jr. Lastly, it helped me to understand more about Martin Luther, in general, with how intuitive and ballsy he had to be in order to stand up to such a powerful force as the Roman Catholic Church.
3. What are all the ideas that Martin Luther had against the church and about Christians, especially the ones in the Ninety-Five Things? What were some of the cartoons that he published, and are there any surviving copies of them? Are there any original copies of the Bible in Greek/Latin?
4. I believe that the Catholic Church will attempt to rebuttal and repress the protestant movement. They would most likely begin perhaps warring on the Protestants in order to crush them by force.
1. - While watching the movie, I was interested to learn that Martin wasn't some crazy extremist that preached passionately against the Catholic church. Also, I learned that he was a gifted theologian and that he used that gift to spread his message effectively throughout the community. I also didn't know that Martin Luther married a nun after establishing his religion.
ReplyDelete2. - This movie helped me to better understand the basis of the Protestant religion, the early practices and corruption of the Catholic church, and the political relationship between the pope, the emperor, and the princes of the Holy Roman Empire.
3. - After watching the movie, I have a few questions:
How long was Luther kept in hiding by the prince?
How did the Catholic church respond to Luther's publishing of the German Bible?
For how long had the Catholic church been so corrupt?
4. - I'm sure the Catholic church realized that it needed to retaliate in some way to win back its followers, so it was most likely made more appealing to the majority of the population by offering certain benefits or perks for converting back.
1. One thing I learned was that Luther was the first to discover and believe that priests could marry. I also learned that after Luther created his religion he ran off and married a nun. One final thing I learned from this movie is that Germany wasn’t a country but it was still apart of the Roman Empire.
ReplyDelete2. One thing this movie helped me better understand was how important the Bible was to the citizens. When Luther was kept in seclusion he translated the Bible and this became very useful. I also got a better understanding on how valuable the power between the Kings and the church was. The Prince went to extremes by kidnapping him to keep him from spreading his beliefs. A third thing I got a deeper understanding for is how Luther wasn’t going to “recant” his 95 theses. You described this to us in class but this made me realize that even after being spoken two twice, would he recant his words or show is belief in indulgences.
3. I am also confused about the last two questions on the worksheet from class. I am confused about What did the royal authorities say to the pope at Augsburg? And also Who emerged victorious when the Peace of Augsburg was signed in 1555? A third topic I am still fuzzy on was the last scene. I don’t know who the people on the hill were and what their purpose was.
4. In response to the Reformation, I think that the Catholic Church will fight back. Part of their fight will be to get its followers back. I like how Laura put her last sentence. I agree with the fact that they could win back followers by somewhat bribing the citizens.
I just lost everything I wrote ... for the second time:
ReplyDeleteThe movie helped me understand Luther's fight for what he believed in. I never knew that Luther was the first priest to get married and believed that priest should be able to get married. I also learned that while Luther was in hiding, instead of regretting his work, he worked even harder for what he believed. I also learned how Luther didn't believe in violence. I think this shows how good of a Christian Luther was.
This movie helped me gain a better understanding of the competition for power between the church and the King. This movie also helped me gain a better understanding about how the common people felt about Luther's work. Lastly, the movie also helped me gain a better understanding of the struggle Luther had when he was in trial, it seemed like he wanted to recant just so the problems would stop but he didn't, and continued to stand his ground.
I am still confused about whether or not the Pope knew he was wrong and if he ever admitted it. I am also confused about how Luther got out of hiding and how word didn't get around that he was among the common people. Lastly, I was confused about if Luther's followers that were priest were also punished by the church.
In response to the reformation I think the church will definitely try to gain followers by some sort of bribes. I think that maybe instead of buy indulgences, the church will try to say that you will go to heaven no matter what and that if you follow Luther you wont go to heaven.
Three new things I learned after watching the movie Luther is that Luther had been captured, and was kept in captivity by the Prince. Another thing i learned was that Luther married a nun after he was freed. And one last thing i learned was that his friend that was a priest was burned.
ReplyDeleteThree things that the movie helped me understand better about the reformation was the 95 theses. It helped me to understand how they were organized abnd what most of them were about. Another thing it helped me to understand better was some of the christian rules. And one last thing that the movie helped me to better understand was the way the church gave out indulgences and the reasoning behind it.
Three things I was confused about while watching this movie was how the Roman Empire was able to connect the church with the governemtn, and how they were actually related. Another thing I was confused about was what happened to the poe after the royal authorities gained their power back? One last thing that still confused me was what happened to the church after authority was gained back? How soon were things changed?
I think that in response to the Reformation, there will be some people that agree with it, and some that don't, and the church will try to do whatever it can to gain as many followers back as they can.
1. I learned about how they used the printing press in new ways to get information out there.
ReplyDelete2. I learned that the printing press helps spreed the words and ideas of one person across the whole country with vary little effort.
3. I learned that the church use pardons to get money for their personal gains. The church lied saying that buying this will get you into heaven.
___________________________________________
1. One thing the movie helped me understand better is the way the church collected money from pardons.
2. Another way the movie helped me understand is that it showed the huge role of the emperor and kings. I had no idea that they played such a big role with the power.
3. The last thing the movie helped me understand better is the way Luther's words moved the people and made them stand up for them selfs and their beliefs.
____________________________________________
1. I am confused about the part at the end of the movie when all the kings stand up to the Emperor and say kill us. I am wondering where the uncle of the Emperor went. He was not there.
2. Why is it bad that they are translating the bible into German?
3. What did the Royal Authorities say to the pope at Augsburg?
____________________________________________
I think the Catholic Church will be supportive of the Reformation because it it new people starting to believe in God.
I had never heard anything about Martin Luther until recently, so this movie taught me a lot. Three things I learned after watching the movie is why Luther wanted to translate the bible, why the Holy Roman Empire wanted to suppress Luther and his works, and why the Prince was on Luther’s side and captured him to keep him from harm.
ReplyDeleteThe movie helped me understand why the Holy Roman Empire wanted to suppress Luther, why he wouldn’t recant even though it would’ve been easier, and how he ended up in Wittenberg instead of becoming a priest.
Three questions I still have are:
How much time was in between the rescue of the runaway nuns and Luther marrying one?
How long did it take Luther to translate the Bible/ how long was he in seclusion?
Why did the man leading the revolt think it was a good idea?
In response to the Reformation, I think the Catholic church would try to make people believe that what Luther believes isn’t true. I think that differences in beliefs will separate groups into different types of religions.
From watching the movie I have learned that Luther was captured and actually saved by the prince. Another thing I learned was that Luther believed that even though he was a priest, that he was still able to marry. Last, I learned that he first began to question indulgences just after he had gotten to the top of the prayer steps.
ReplyDeleteThis movie helped me better understand who held power during the time period, how churches actually collected money/ how the indulgences worked, and how Luther's followers felt towards him.
How long did it take Luther to translate the Bible?
Did anyone even suspect the prince was keeping him in seclusion?
How long was he in seclusion?
I think that the Catholic Church will do whatever they can to try to get Luther's followers to stop believing in Luther's beliefs. I think that the Catholic church will make up more lies and threats to scare people off from believing in Luther.
After watching the movie, I learned that Luther got married (I knew that he believed priests should be able to marry- but I did not know he had a wife and six children.) I also did not know that Luther was captured and saved by the prince, or that he caused so much uproar in the Holy Roman Empire that someone would go to the extent of trying to kill him.
ReplyDeleteThe movie also gave me an idea of how brave Luther had to be; I now understand how dangerous it was to challenge the Holy Roman Empire back then. The movie also helped me understand how corrupt the empire was, and how they were able to convince the common people to buy indulgences; for example, when the man held his hand over a flame and compared that moment of pain to spending eternity in hell.
Three things I am still confused about is 1. why Luther’s friend was burned to death when he tried to enter Rome, 2. What happened to the pope after Luther caused reformation in Catholicism? And 3. What did Luther do once he caused the reformation he was looking for?
Lastly, in response to the reformation I think that the Catholic church will change their ways and stop trying to get people to purchase things like indulgences. I also think that they will try to re-focus on doing good rather than selling people their way to heaven.
In the film we watched I learned who Martin Luther was, why he split off from the catholic church and why some people don't like the catholic church.
ReplyDeleteThe three things I understand better are how the protestants came to be, why there was a sudden killing of peasants and why the protestants don't like the catholics.
I don't really have any questions about Luther. I think I understand what happened.
I think the catholic church will respond to the reformation by persecuting the protestants and trying to make the follows of Luther rejoin the catholic church.
1. -He married a run away nun
ReplyDelete-That there is a German version of the bible
-That Luthger had many followers
2. -him posting the paper on the church
-how his Theses were spread
-how people in the church convinced people to buy indulgences
3. -why people would ever belive that indulgences worked
-why people cared about getting people already dead to heaven
-why they all had those weird hair cuts
4. -I think that the church will start losing money but gaining followers.
From the movie we watched I learned that they were burning the prince. Also i learned that Martin Luther married a runaway nun.. Finally I learned that the translated bible was a gift.
ReplyDeleteThe movie helped me understand Martins punishment more. It also helped me understand how Luther and his followers were victorious. It also helped me understand how he was captured.
I am still confused about why not everyone followed gum. Also if it wasn't okay for him to get married, why were there so many attending his wedding. Finally why did the prince decide to leave.
I think that the catholic church will translate more bibles into different languages.
-Dut
1.I learned that the Catholic Church was very dominating and dictated what their followers are going to believe.
ReplyDelete2.I did not think that Luther was going to win the case against the Catholic Church.
3.The church lied to the people for money
1.That it is possible for one person to change a whole way of life.
2.How the Catholic Church works and what they believe in.
3.People are easily brainwashed when it comes to life or death.
No questions or confusion, I understand it all.
They will re evaluate the ways of the church and allow people to branch off and believe in different religions.
