I'd like you to reflect on the note taking homework assignment and quiz from Friday. Use the following questions as a guide and answer the ones that apply:
Did taking notes help you to recall information on the quiz when you weren't allowed to use your notes? Why or why not?
Did your notes help you to answer the questions on the quiz? If not, why not? Were your notes too brief? Or did you miss the main ideas?
Did your notes include too many unimportant details?
When you shared your notes for round three, what did you notice about your group members' notes? Were they more or less thorough than yours? Did they use particular organizational tactics that were similar or different from yours? What did you learn about your OWN note taking skills (strengths and/or weaknesses) from looking at what your classmates recorded?
EVERYONE MUST ANSWER THIS ONE!
Why do you think teachers ask you to take notes on what you read?
Taking notes on the reading helped me a little. I usually remember information well on my own but there were some questions that I would not have been able to answer if I had not taken notes.
ReplyDeleteI did take good notes. There was only one question that I was not able to answer because I did not include it in my notes. All of the other questions I would have been able to answer using my notes. I had most of the information that I needed but I did not have too much information.
When my group shared notes I noticed that we had about the same amount of notes. I might have taken a little bit more notes than my group members but they were mostly the same. My group member’s notes were organized differently than mine.
Teachers want you to take notes on readings because if you are taking good notes you can't just skim the reading you have to read all of the information. Also writing information down helps some people remember it better than just reading it.
Taking notes on the reading definitely helped me. Usually when I read I find that I lose focus since, when I come to the end of the passage I cannot recall information. Therefore, taking notes helped engrave the information into my head and really focus on the main ideas.
ReplyDeleteI thought that the notes that I took helped me to perform well on the quiz. Once I had filled out everything just by recalling the information I used my notes and was able to fill out each question. Although some weren’t the answer intended for that question the information was still correct based on the reading. All the information that I jotted down was relevant. However, in some instances I went into much further detail than was needed.
Our group just briefly shared notes because we did not have many questions that were unanswered. We all had roughly about two pages of notes. A similar organization skill was also common including bullet points and indentations to group together similar ideas.
I believe that teacher’s encourage students to take notes because when you just read your mind is often focused on other things. With note taking it is difficult to skim the reading because you have to include brief details. Also, by writing the information down is supposedly helps many people remember the information because they have to process it in order to write it down.
I feel that my notes helped me to recall things on the test because with some questions I knew that the answers were in my notes and I could kind of visualize what my notes said. My notes did not really have unimportant information, but they did not have the right information necessarily for this quiz. However, the not included information that was necessary I merely could recall from memory or decipher the correct answer based on the question and what I could recall. My answers with the notes, however, were more thorough and accurate to the reader, in some cases, because of the notes I took. When I take my notes, I read through a paragraph, then go back and highlight what I thought was important from that paragraph. Then, after I have read through the reader I go back and read over only the highlighted bits and write down notes based off of the main ideas, so it ends up even more condensed.
ReplyDeleteWhen sharing notes, I noticed that, although theirs were maybe organized a bit differently, we all had basically the same information. From this, I understand that we all try to pull the main information, but I sometimes will quote what is said, which may or may not have been more useful than others’ notes. My notes are also organized using different levels of bulleting, headings, and sometimes I won’t use whole words, instead I will use short cuts such as “w/” for “with.”
I think that teachers have students write notes based off of the reading to get kids to understand the main ideas of the reading better. Sometimes students will just read a section and not pull the information from it that they should. So, writing notes allows students to reflect on what they read more in order to get main ideas from it and think of the points in a way that makes sense to them.
I found that by taking notes while I read I was able to recall most of the information during the quiz. I learn best by taking notes and actively reading so this was just another way to prove to myself that it is worth taking notes. I feel like I did a good job takin notes on the really important things. My group didn't really share nots but I did notice that Alex took notes in a really different way than the rest of my group. He wrote his notes in paragraph form - I would rather do bullets becaus I can find information easily. Teachers ask us to take notes because it helps us remember things. I think all of us have had an experience where we read a paragraph and we don't recall anything we remember. Active reading, taking notes, helps us remember what we have read.
ReplyDeleteTaking notes on the reading really helped me remember information for the quiz. I was able to answer everything asked, and surprisingly, the majority of the answers were right. My notes had the answers to everything that was on the quiz… and more. I think that I took to many notes, seeing as only about half of them turned out to be useful. I defiantly think that I included too many details; I think that next time I should write down the main ideas of a topic, and not worry about the little stuff. During round three, when Aimee and I compared notes, made me realize I wrote too much. I don’t think that writing as little as she did would have worked for me though, because I think that I have to write in complete sentences and in a some what organized way in order to remember things correctly. We had somewhat similar organizational skills, though I think I put more sections.
ReplyDeleteLastly, I think that teachers ask students to take notes on what they read because they realize that it really helps most students not only remember, but understand what they read about.
I do not remember information easily so yes, taking notes helped me remember answers for the quiz. After reading the information, writing it down in your own notes helps you recall it. I was able to answer about half of the questions from just memory. When we were allowed to take our notes out I was not able to answer the rest of them because I don't think my notes were very useful. I wrote down too little information.
ReplyDeleteMy notes compared to the other people at my table were less thorough. We used the same organization tactics which was writing down the main idea and then writing the details beneath it. I have now learned that I should take more time taking the notes and think more carefully about what is note-worthy.
I think teachers ask students to take notes on what they read because it is an easy way to remember the information. In addition to remembering it, it may also be a good study tool for the future because instead of having to re-read the reading, you will already have the main ideas of the topic to study from.
I think the notes helped me a little. Writing it down and analyzing it I think made me learn it and remember it better. The notes helped me a lot on my quiz. I got most of the answers right on my own, but the notes had a little more detail that I could add which would help me get more points. No, I learned to make notes short and to the point. All you need is the basic information, not an entire paragraph explaining one thing. That way you can fit more notes and if you’d like, add more to your previous notes if you have room. All of our notes looked very similar; some had more or less facts than mine. What we did was write the topic/subject title, and then put information bullets underneath for that subject. I learned that mine are pretty good; they were accurate and organized and definitely helped me. The teachers tell us to take notes so we can remember the important details of the reading that we may use to study for a test or use on homework or class work.
ReplyDeleteTaking notes always helps me recall information because I actually start thinking about what I am writing. In this case, my notes were not so great because I was rushing to get them done. I was sick the day before so I had no idea what the homework was; I started taking notes during my third block hoping it’d be done before fourth block started. I usually take very long notes with too many unimportant details so I was not able to finish. The notes that I did have helped me complete the quiz but I noticed that I had too many unimportant details. Other peoples notes weren’t as long as mine but the tactic was pretty much the same. I learned that I add too many unimportant details because I think they’re important but the truth is that I just need the main ideas. I believe teachers ask us all to take notes on things we’ve read because it helps us retain the information were reading instead of letting it come in one ear and out the other.
ReplyDeleteNote taking generally helps me retain information better; even though I don't usually look back over my notes, the act of writing down what I need to know helps reinforce the information in my memory. For this quiz, as per usual, I took down more info than was actually on the test. In my notes I identified the main ideas but didn't include very many details about them, and it was this kind of information I needed for the test. During round three, I noticed that my group members' notes were better organized and more thorough than my own. This exercise made me realize that the notes I take are OK, but generally contain either too much information or have just the basic ideas.
ReplyDeleteI think the reason teachers ask you to take notes on a piece you're assigned because it forces you to take a second look at the information. Also, when you write notes out, you actually have to think about and process the words instead of just passively reading.
When we were told not to use our notes the first time around, I did recall about half of the information from the notes I took. I think they did help because I am somewhat of a visual learner and when I write things down I can imagine them in my head, which in this case allowed me to see the answers. I also learn things but repeating them, so I read the information and then wrote it down which is like reviewing them twice. This helped me remember the important parts from the article.
ReplyDeleteTaking notes defiantly helped me answer the questions on the quiz; I had all the information from the quiz available to me in the notes I took. My notes were very detailed and thorough, which allowed me to go back and get the answers. My notes were not to brief, if anything too detailed, and I did not miss the main ideas. I used titles, subtitles, and multiple bullets to keep my notes very detailed but still organized.
When I shared notes with my group I realized that some of them had the same idea as me, to use bullets and titles, but I saw that they wrote a lot less detail than I did. This may have been beneficial to them because they would have fewer notes to read through before finding the answer, but it isn’t a way that works for me because I have trouble leaving out details. I feel as though they left out details that I didn’t, but in the end they had the same answers as I did, theirs were just more concise. I have trouble shortening what I need to write and my group did a better job at that than I did, which made my notes a lot longer. I learned that I need to not write out as many notes and pick out the more important details.
I think teacher ask us to take notes on what we read so we can go back and study from our notes in our own words. When I take notes I put the information in my own words so I can later go back and understand it a lot easier. Teachers encourage us to take notes because it makes us become active readers instead of just reading an article where your mind is in a different place, you have to comprehend what is being written to use it as a study tool in the future. I think also because students remember things better by writing it down.
Yes taking notes helped. I found that writing things down helps you remember them. My notes helped me on the quiz even though I didn't use them because writing things down made me review and helped me to remember. I think that my notes were a little too brief. I could have added more detail.
ReplyDeleteI noticed that other people in my group included more detail than I had in my notes. I learned that my notes needed to be longer and more detailed.
I think teacher make you take notes on what your read because so it's easier to study and you don't have to go back to the paper to find things. You also have to pay more attention to what you're reading when you take notes.
Taking notes helped me out on the quiz because i was able to remember a lot of the information i wrote down from the reading. I don't normally take notes when I have to read but now I will start to because I remembered more information from the reading. My notes helped me answer most of the questions on the quiz. I didn't the notes for a couple of the questions but for the most part my notes helped me a lot. I should have had little more notes than I did. My group notes had a little less than I had but we had most of the same information. My note taking skills are pretty good because I answered most of the questions on the quiz and I remembered a lot of important information from the reading.
ReplyDeleteOn the quiz, my notes didnt really help because everything i wrote down i remembered. In round 3 my group members did have more notes then me but i think a llot of it was unnecessary. Some of their notes did help me though so i should have looked for more details. I learned that i do take good notes but i should just spend a little more time doing it. I think teachers make kids take notes so they actually read the worksheet and look for details. And they do it so they have evidence that kids did their homework.
ReplyDeleteI CANT SAY ANYTHING BECAUSE I DIDNT DO ANYTHING!
ReplyDeleteTaking notes helped me remember the information better, even though I dont use my notes to study writing them down helps me remember because just reading I lose focus and don't really remember alot of it. My notes helped on the questions I didn't remember there was only one or two questions I couldn't answer. I don't think I had to much unimportant information there were a couple things I didn't need but not much. When my group shared notes they were similar to mine probably about the same amount of information. I think teachers make students take notes because it helps them learn and also to make sure they did the reading.
ReplyDeleteTaking notes helped me on the quiz because taking the notes really helped me retain the information. Writing the notes helps me stay focused on the reading, because when I take notes on something I read through the section first then read through it again and take notes, so I pay attention more the first time because I know it's going to help me the second time. My problem was that the notes I wrote and some of the information I retained ended not being that important, and I missed some important things. Note taking deffinately helps me, I just need to learn to take more accurate notes. I think teachers have us take notes because it shows we read through the section and got something from reading it. They also help later with studying for tests and going over material you may have not understood the first time you read it
ReplyDeleteI think that the first time taking the quiz went well. I got the main ideas and the genera knowledge with out notes. I feel like i could remember most things real well. I think that when I used my packet I was able to put more details into my answers and be more specific. When our group shared notes believe we all had the same basic ideas but it helped me get their different views and how they interpreted the reading as opposed to how I interpreted it. The first time I read the packet I went through and underlined what I thought was important. Then I went back and only read the underlined sections and took notes on that. I divided my notes into each category from the reading and took notes on each. Most of my group did this too. They wrote down a title and then used starts or bullet pointed information under each topic. I think that teachers tell students to take notes because its a way for us to study hands on. I know that for me copying the same thing over and over helps me memorize it a lot easier then just reading it and staring at the paper we were given with the information on it. I also thunk that I tend to take too much notes down. I don't mind writing so I'll copy down every detail thinking that it may be important and I don't want to forget anything. Compared to my group I think that I may have had mire notes because mine included a great deal of detail.
ReplyDeleteI think taking notes did help me recall some of the things that were discussed in the reading because for me, I remember things by writing them down. When I came to a question that i knew the answer to, it was because i was paying attention to what I was writing, and that helps me to remember information.
ReplyDeleteMy notes did help me to answer the questions that I didn't know, and I think this was mainly because I took notes all through first semester, so that really helped me gain experience in writing notes.
My notes didn't contain too many unimportant details, although it did contain some details that weren't exactly necessary, although they were important.
When we shared notes in the third round, i noticed that some notes were more bfrief than mine, and some that were much longer. Some people had headings to their notes with the different sections, and others just let it flow into one another, which is the tactic that i used. I noticed that my notes could have been more organized, but it wasn't hard to find any of the needed points in my notes.
I think that the teachers ask us to take notes on what we read because they want to know that we actually read the material, and know that we have a somewhat general idea of what the reading was about.
On the quiz my notes didnt really help me much. I did not get many answers from my notes mostly because I didnt take notes on the correct things. I feel like my notes werent too brief but not on the correct subjects. I feel that my notes included way too many unimportant details. When we passed our notes around the group I noticed that my notes werent really used. My group mostly had really good notes that i used. I learned that I really need to work on my note taking skills.

By taking notes on things that I read, I realize i recall the information much better than I do by just reading the text. Usually, when I read, I end up losing focus. So by the end of the reading, I don't remember what I read. However, just by taking notes, it makes me really absorb what I read and I'm able to reinforce the information without even having to look them over. The process of writing things down really makes ideas stick in my head.
ReplyDeleteUsually when I take notes, I write down a good amount of information. Sometimes I end up writing down too much info, some that may not be that important. I find that reading the paragraph or a section of the text, then writing down what i think is important is the best method. I used to read a few sentances and then write down info. But by using this method, I ended up writing down way too much unimportant information. Most of the time, i use the same format (writing down the major headings and then listing the important details) and I find it organized and easy to read.
I think that teachers assign students to take notes for two reasons. The first reason is because they want the students to prove that they actually read the text and got a full understanding of it. The other reason realtes more to myself. If a teacher assigned just a reading for homework, I would do it. However, the next day I could come into class not knowing that I read. Even by reading over text a few times, sometimes I still don't fully understand it. A majority of the time I get a better outcome by taking notes on what I've read.
I think that taking notes can help a student learn although it isn't always the best way to remember facts, sometimes simply reading the story once or twice can do just as well. My notes did help me to answer the one or two questions I didn't know in the first place. I think that if given the chance to use notes on a test it is very important to do. I think that I had very useful notes, perfectly enough facts. I didn't really get to use any group member's notes other than Christina's and she had a significantly larger amount of notes, and that can be good or bad, but always helpful. Ours were both organized in the same manner for the most part. I think I have sufficient note taking skills. I think that teachers ask us to take notes so we learn the material much more deeply, but if the student actually learns that much better is debatable.
ReplyDeleteI think that teachers make kids take notes because they retain the knowledge more when they are writing it all out. My notes that I took seemed long enough for me but there were some topics on the practice quiz that were very specific and only where mentioned in a small portion of the text. I did not really get a chance the other day to review my group's notes because I was writing down more notes about the packet.
ReplyDeleteNote takeing did help me to remember things during the quiz. I need to work on picking out what is important and what isnt. I also need to not write down to much information because i had so much notes that I didnt even have any of what I really needed for the quiz. During the quiz my notes helped me answer some questions that I could not remember. The notes i took were not bref and they were vag notes not notes I could really use. I missed the main ideas of the paper because I dont understand how to pick out the important parts of the paper. Yes my notes had too many unimportant details. When we shared our notes with my other classmates it made my notes look horrible I thought my notes were really bad and they looked unorganized, sloppy, and bad. I learned new techneques on how to take notes from my other class mates.
